Protect The N.C. Public Campaign Fund
The success of North Carolina's public campaign financing program for statewide judicial candidates has brought our state national acclaim and been embraced by over 75% of candidates since its inception. Unfortunately, the program is now under attack in the NC General Assembly. Sign up for our e-mail action alerts so you can be ready to protect this vital program when the time comes.

North Carolina Is Better Than This!
Learn how our state has become a target for a highly-organized national voter suppression effort and what you can do to fight back. Help us defeat bills to eliminate Same-Day Registration, reduce Early Voting hours, eliminate Sunday voting, cut pre-registration for teens and impose other restrictions on who can vote in NC.

Register to Vote Now Using On-Line Resources
The best way to fight efforts to limit the vote is to make sure you are properly registered and to encourage others to so the same. A new on-line tool from Rock the Vote makes registering easy, even when you live oversea or in the military. It allows you to easily register using on-line forms that you print out and mail, and It guides American citizens living and serving abroad through the process with a friendly state-specific set of questions, instructions and county-level addresses for mailing in your form. Don't Put Discrimination in the N.C. Constitution

Voters at the Polls

The 2012 primary ballot will ask voters whether to add an amendment to the NC Constitution that says, “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”

This language puts the State in the business of regulating religious ceremonies. It would also prohibit a gay couple from having a civil union; it would end domestic partnerships for gay and straight people alike; and it would block all unwed couples from vital legal protections and benefits affecting their children, property, insurance, inheritance, etc. The language creates second-class citizens and then puts that bias into the state constitution.

Coretta Scott King said, “I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King’s dream to make room at the table of brother- and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.” Democracy North Carolina has its roots in the Southern Freedom Movement; we embrace a vision of inclusion and equal rights for all. We oppose the misuse of the NC Constitution to promote discrimination and the use of wedge issues to divide and distract voters.

Amendment 1 is really about discrimination. We should not add its tricky, divisive language to the NC Constitution. Learn more about Amendment 1, and how to work against its passage, at Protect NC Families.

Help Protect Voting Rights in North Carolina!

July 2011 Voting Rights Rally Group

Just days from the end of this year's first session, Republican leaders in the NC General Assembly unveiled a sweeping 44-page anti-voting bill that would rewrite NC’s election laws. Senate Bill 47 would repeal Same-Day Registration in North Carolina, ban straight-ticket voting, shorten Early Voting by a week, end Sunday voting and much more. Learn more here, including what you can do about it, and sign up for our voting rights action alerts. Help fight attempts to roll back voting rights for millions of North Carolinians -- learn how you can help here.

Thank Governor Perdue for her veto of the Voter Photo ID Bill.

Souls to the Polls: We Are the Stewards of Our Communities

Sample ImageDemocracy North Carolina is proud to be a part of Souls to the Polls, a nonpartisan initiative that encourages faith communities to Get Out The Vote and to play an appropriate role in policy debates affecting their communities. Civic engagement by faith groups is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years in America and has been used by people of all denominations and political affiliations. Right now, we are educating faith communities about recent and well-organized attacks on basic voting rights in North Carolinians. We need leaders of faith to get involved in protecting these rights, through legal non-partisan activities.
